Brooks M. Whitehurst, PE, DSc, President of Whitehurst Associates, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Whitehurst is a seasoned chemical engineer, with over 30 patents in products and processes to minimize ammonia volatilization from urea, products for applications of micronutrient coatings on solid fertilizer substrates, and coatings used on crops to prevent the loss of micronutrients. He as made significant strides in environmentalism including biodegradable systems, waste disposal, rubber recycling, and the conversion of industrial by-products to non-toxic materials. Dr. Whitehurst has led his namesake firm since 1981, after working as a manager of engineering for Texasgulf Inc. for 13 years.

Born to David Brooks and Bessie Ann Whitehurst, Dr. Whitehurst attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to earn a BS in 1951, and became a senior process assistant with the American Enka Corp. in Lowland, Tennessee. Five years later, he became a senior process development engineer with the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., where he worked until 1963. He was a project engineer with Texaco Inc., and after working with Texasgulf he launched his own innovative company. As a prominent chemical engineer, he has given his time to the Wood Enterprise Institute and a number of committees and task forces in North Carolina on education, trade, and industry. Dr. Whitehurst is a member of numerous chemical societies, notably as a director of the board for the American Institute of Chemists from 1980 to 1984.

Dr. Whitehurst received an honorary DSc from Roanoke College in 2012, and an honorary LittD from the International Biographical Center of Cambridge in 2013. The Center also presented him with a Gold Medal and the title of Honorary Director General. He is a recipient of the Sir Isaac Newton Legacy of Honour Award, inclusion in the 2014 Engineering Hall of Fame, an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award. Dr. Whitehurst is a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Leader featured in the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World. He is the proud father of Garnett, Anita, and Robert with his wife, Carolyn Sue Boyer.
