Ronald LeRoy Richmond, Aerospace Engineer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Aviation.
Dr. Richmond is an aviation engineer who worked for such luminary firms as Lockheed Aircraft, Douglas Aircraft, and Ford Aerospace up until the late ‘80s, and served as the director of engineering for Brunswick Defense in Costa Mesa until 1994. He is known for experimentally proving that skin friction force on long, slender cylinders was several times that on flat plates, at Mach 5.8 for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. At a very young age, Dr. Richmond was interested in airplanes, so the field was a natural fit. He is still flying planes , and does his own maintenance on his own aircraft.
Born in Los Angeles to William Paul and Martha Emelia Richmond, Dr. Richmond earned a BSME from the University of California, Berkeley in 1952, and further studied for a MS in aeronautical engineering at the California Institute of Technology in 1953. After working in Burbank as an aerodynamicist at Lockheed, he earned a PhD in aeronautical engineering as a teaching and research assistant at Caltech. Dr. Richmond joined Douglas Aircraft in 1957, and went on to Ford in 1959 as chief of engineers in advisory development. In 1987, Dr. Richmond briefly became a professor with the school of engineering at the University of California, Irvine, and joined Brunswick Defense in 1988. He had developed a reputation for conquering technical challenges and for bringing any project he was assigned to success.
Dr. Richmond is the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World. He was notably chosen as subgroup leader for the NATO Industrial Advisory Group #16 from 1984 to 1986, and worked with the famed Shelby American Automobiles company in Los Angeles from 1960 to 1962. Dr. Richmond also served to the rank of reserve lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department from 1976 to 2012, was a commander of the Western States Association of Sheriff’s Air Squadrons from 1987 to 1988, and is a former president and board chairman of the Skylarks of Southern California. Dr. Richmond married Mary Louise Gates in 1955, and is the proud father of Pandora Deanne Richmond Whitson and Steve Lee.
