Wilfried Georg Smarsly, PhD, Materials Engineer at MTU Aero Engines AG, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Science.

Dr. Smarsly has been an engineer in the aeronautical and aerospace industries since first working as a a research scientist with the German Aeronautical and Aerospace Organization, now the German Aerospace Center, in 1980. He was a senior materials engineer with Motoren-und Turbinen-Union GmbH, predecessor to his current firm, the MTU Aero Engines AG. In 2016, Dr. Smarsly was honored by the firm with an Executive Board Prize. He is also a recipient of a Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award, and has appeared in numerous volumes of Who’s Who in the World as well as the 11th edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.

Born in Freckenhorst, Germany to Georg Reinhold and Erika Erna Smarsly, Dr. Smarsly holds a diploma in physics from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, and further studied for a Dr. rer. nat. from RWTH Aachen University in 1985. He joined his current firm in 1987, and was appointed head of advanced materials and design from 1997 to 2003. He has also been an evaluator for the European Commission since 1995, an evaluator for EuroNorm since 2000, and most recently accepted the role for Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft e.V. in 2006. Dr. Smarsly is perhaps best known for his invention of a production process for propulsion parts in aeronautical and aerospace applications, as well as patents for novel intermetallic alloys for automotive and aero engines. He is the inventor of a type of hollow metal sphere structure for safety engineering.

Dr. Smarsly is a member of the The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society based in Pennsylvania, the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining in London, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde e. V. in Frankfurt, Germany. He is also the author of “A Journey Through Space and Time,” and an advisory board member of the Surface Engineering Institute based in Aachen, Germany. Dr. Smarsly has continued to improve himself, and in 2000 he earned a BS and a diploma in general management from the Open University.
