Thomas V. Falkie, Ph.D., Retired Mining Engineer at the Berwind Natural Resources Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mining engineering.

Influenced by his father, who was a coal miner, Dr. Falkie was interested in the field of engineering from his formative years. Upon seeing a billboard advertising a scholarship in mining engineering, he applied for the scholarship and subsequently won. He attended the Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mining engineering in 1956, Master of Science in mining engineering in 1958, and Doctor of Philosophy in mining engineering in 1961. He was a pioneer in the early application of computers to mining problems. While obtaining his doctorate, he was a fellow and research assistant at the university between 1956 and 1961. Upon graduation, he served in various engineering and managerial positions for the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation from 1961 to 1969 and subsequently transitioned to professor and head of the mineral engineering department at Pennsylvania State University from 1969 to 1973. Thereafter, he worked as the Director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Department of the Interior in Washington, DC, from 1974 to 1977.

From 1977 to 1998, Dr. Falkie acted in several capacities with the Berwind Natural Resources Corporation, including as president and as chief executive officer from 1977 to 1998, chairman of the board from 1998 to 2003, and on the board of directors since 2004. Alongside his primary endeavors, he has been on the advisory committee of mining and mineral resources research with the Department of the Interior from 1988 to 1994 and a member of the board of minerals and energy resources with the National Research Council from 1982 to 1988. Likewise, he briefly served as an adjunct professor of industrial engineering at the University of Florida and University of Southern Florida in 1966. He served on the Board of Directors of Capra Minerals Corp. from 2003 to2015.

On the board of trustees of SME Foundation from 2003 to 2015, Dr. Falkie is an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum Engineers and has been an honorary director of the National Mining Association since 2002. The former president of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, he received the Erskine Ramsay Medal and the Distinguished Service Award from the organization in 1991 and 2001, respectively. In addition, he was elected to the National Mining Hall of Fame and received the Gold Medal from the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. He considers these achievements to be among the highlights of his career.
