Walter L. Warnick, PhD, Retired Mechanical Engineer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.
Dr. Warnick is a highly esteemed engineer and energy executive who most recently served as director of the Office of Scientific and Technical Information at the United States Department of Energy. He joined the Department of Energy as an engineer in 1978 and was promoted to senior executive in 1985 before earning the post of director in 1997. Dr. Warnick began his career as an engineer with Westinghouse Electric Company LLC before being named to the same position with the United States Naval Research Laboratory.
Dr. Warnick earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering from John Hopkins University in Baltimore and both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland in College Park. Outside of his primary career responsibilities, he has served as the Department of Energy’s representative for the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program and was a member of the Depository Library Council in the United States Government Publishing Office.
A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Warnick is also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Sigma Xi, for which he is a past chapter president. Sigma Xi also awarded him with both its Department of Energy-wide Information Executive Leadership Award, and government-wide IRMCO Award in 2001.
Dr. Warnick is the author of the books “Warnick Families of Western Maryland,” “Wilt Families of Western Maryland” and “The Fazenbaker Family of Western Michigan.” Additionally, he served as the president of the citizen’s advisory committee to the Howard County Board of Education in Ellicott City, Maryland, from 1980 to1982. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Warnick was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in Finance and Business.
