Valerie Mitchell-Stevens, Systems Engineer in the Advanced Technologies Department at Lucent Bell Laboratories, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.
Looking to enhance the quality of life for human beings, Dr. Mitchell-Stevens embraced the rise of technology as an invaluable opportunity. She started by becoming a research engineer at the Office of Naval Research and an associate professor of engineering at Federal City College in 1973, after which she became part of the technology staff at Bell Laboratories. Dr. Mitchell-Stevens served in that capacity from 1974 to 1996. She then advanced through roles like senior technology staff at AT&T Laboratories and Lucent Technologies, wireless handset design engineer at Philips Consumer Communications, and systems engineer in the Advanced Technologies Department at Lucent Bell Laboratories. Over the years, Dr. Mitchell-Stevens has taken a great pride in the impact her developments have had. She considers one of her greatest professional accomplishments to be designing, engineering, and installing an outdoor fiber optic network for product development and testing from Newark, New Jersey, to Holmdel, New Jersey, and from Murray Hill, New Jersey, to Chicago, Illinois. This network included network management capabilities, tools, and wireless remote-access resources.
Dr. Mitchell-Stevens furthered her own knowledge of technology by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in engineering at Findlay University in 1971, a Master of Science in engineering at Howard University in 1973, and a PhD in management science at Stevens Institute of Technology in 1980. She also completed postdoctoral classes at Walden University with an approved prospectus in 2015 and became a certified adult education teacher in New Jersey, a certified emergency medical technician (EMT), and a certified CPR/AED/first aid instructor through the American Red Cross.
