Howard C. Gibbs, Civil Engineer at the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering, architecture and aerospace technology.

Mr. Gibbs was inspired by his father, who was a bricklayer, to go into a construction-related career. While in junior high school, he developed an affinity for math and science and found civil engineering to support both of these interests. In order to go into the field, he pursued his education at the University of the District of Columbia, receiving a BSCE, summa cum laude, in 1979. He later earned a Master of Science in engineering management at George Washington University in 1996. Mr. Gibbs started his career as a technical assistant at the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) in 1972 and through the years moved into the roles of civil engineer, senior civil engineer, and to his final role with the company, senior supervising engineer. In 2006, Mr. Gibbs started a new venture as an adjunct professor in the Department of Engineering, Architecture, and Aerospace Technology at the University of District of Columbia.

In addition to these positions, Mr. Gibbs currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Washington State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. He is also an Assistant Vice President for the Northeast Zone of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. In recognition of his work, Mr. Gibbs has received a number of awards and accolades. In 2014, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying in 2013 and the Meritorious Service Award from the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies in 2012 and 2005. Furthermore, Mr. Gibbs was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus with the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education at the University of the District of Columbia in 2002, and as an Outstanding Graduate of the Local American Society of Civil Engineers Chapter of the University of the District of Columbia in 1979.
