Title: Packaging Engineer
Company: Hewlett-Packard Company
Location: Philomath, Oregon, United States
Sil Arata, Packaging Engineer at the Hewlett-Packard Company, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in industrial engineering.
Mr. Arata got into his profession inadvertently. While working at a paper mill before college, he became familiar with packaging and then went on to work at Tektronix as an inspector. During his time there, the company was looking to design a box for a product and Mr. Arata was able to define what it really was and what it was made of. Recognizing his natural ability in this venture, the manager assigned the project to Mr. Arata and asked him to take the packaging engineer manager position because he knew what he was talking about. He worked in this role until 1978, briefly joining the John Fluke Manufacturing Company before settling in a career with Hewlett-Packard.
Mr. Arata earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering at Oregon State University in 1959. He had previously served in the US Navy from 1949 to 1952. On a civic level, he was the fundraising chairman of Junior Achievement in 1976, a Loaned Executive for United Way in 1971 and a Captain with the East County Multnomah Republican Central Committee in 1966. Mr. Arata feels the success in his career is due to forging ahead as a pioneer and following what he thought was right. He was guided by his natural abilities in the field and never had professional trainers or mentors. In his career, he learned that being accurate and learning from and admitting his mistakes was most beneficial to his professional growth. He also believes that giving everyone their due credit is a valuable trait to have.
A highlight of Mr. Arata’s career was being nominated for lifetime honorary membership of the Institute of Packaging Professionals. He was also nominated by two chapters of the Society of Packaging Engineers. In addition, he served as a judge and fellow of the Institute of Packaging Professionals and served as Chairman of the Recertification Committee, Vice President of the Western Region and Chairman of the National Honors Awards Committee. He has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who in the World. In his retirement, he enjoys his hobbies of railroad and aircraft memorabilia, woodworking and traveling.
