Dr. Basaran got into his profession because he was attracted to technology and how fast it moves. He liked the University of Houston because it is a good research school. His field of expertise within mechanical engineering is materials science. He has worked at the institution since 2011, starting as an instructional assistant professor and moving into the role of assistant professor in 2015. Within his work with the school, he endeavors to create a new curriculum within the program. His areas of expertise include smart materials such as shape memory alloys and polymers, light metals, composite materials, superalloys, computer aided-design, manufacturing and development and innovative teaching techniques.
When students leave his classroom, Dr. Basaran hopes that they carry with it the values that it takes to be responsible engineers first and foremost. In his pedagogy, he teaches his students to be aware of the environment and that making money is not the whole part of the career. He instills in his students that to be a responsible professional means caring for future generations and thinking about the world as a whole. In his own career, he credits his success to his diligence, perseverance and faith. Dr. Basaran earned a Bachelor of Science in 1996 from Osmangazi University and continued at Gazi University to receive a Master of Science in 2001 and in 2003. He earned a PhD in materials science and engineering from Texas A&M University in 2009.
