Mario Fontana, retired group leader at Advanced Concepts, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering technology.

With more than 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Fontana retired in 1994, having been a group leader at Advanced Concepts since 1993. Prior to obtaining this role, he was assistant to the director of engineering technology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1990 to 1992, director of nuclear safety technology at IT Corporation and Tenera, LP from 1985 to 1990, and vice president of engineering at Energex from 1984 to 1985.

From 1981 to 1984, Dr. Fontana was director of the degraded core program at Tech for Energy, Inc. He previously held a number of positions with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, including head of advanced concepts development engineering technology from 1972 to 1981, assistant director of nuclear safety research from 1968 to 1972, and a member of the research staff from 1957 to 1963 and 1965 to 1981. Earlier in his career, he was an instructor at Purdue University from 1964 to 1965 and a senior scientist at Avco Research and Advanced Development from 1963 to 1964.

Dr. Fontana began his career as a student at the University of Massachusetts, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1955. He then joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completing a Master of Science in 1957. He continued his studies with Purdue University, earning a PhD of mechanical engineering in 1968. He is a registered engineer in the state of Tennessee.
