With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Bullen has been a member of the technical staff and a cognizant engineer at the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board since 2011. Prior to obtaining his current roles, he was a senior managing engineer at Exponent Failure Analysis Associates from 2004 to 2011, and a member of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board from 1997 to 2004. He was twice appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve on the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board and has authored 120 technical reports and archival journal articles
From 1992 to 2004, Dr. Bullen was an associate professor at Iowa State University, having been an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1990 to 1992 and North Carolina State University from 1989 to 1990. Earlier in his career, he was a principal engineer with DG Engineering, Inc., from 1988 to 1989, a senior engineer with Science and Engineering Associates, Inc., from 1986 to 1988, and an engineer with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1984 to 1986. Dr. Bullen holds a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Bullen plans to continue to work for the government and enhance nuclear safety at various facilities and attributes his success to being prepared, which is advice he hopes to impart upon the next generation of workers.
