Victor H. “Vic” Edwards, Owner and Principal Consultant at VHE Technical Analysis, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemical engineering.
Inspired by his father to enter the field of engineering, Dr. Edwards earned a BS from Rice University, was only the second graduate student to earn a biochemical engineering degree at California University Berkeley, and the first to earn a Ph.D. in that specialty. In addition to his studies and research, he played a major role in the creation of the biochemical engineering research laboratory at California University Berkeley. His contributions included building and operating a glass reactor system for the continuous cultivation of sulfate-reducing bacteria, obtaining design data for a commercial process to remove sulfates from seawater, and creating and using of one of the first electronic systems for the electronic counting and sizing of populations of bacteria and other microorganisms. Dr. Edwards held various esteemed positions throughout the course of his career and was the second chemical engineer hired by the U.S. National Science Foundation. He was invited to work with the first chemical engineer there, Lewis G. Mayfield, to create the first national biotechnology research program. Called Enzyme Technology at that time, the team solicited research proposals at a number of universities and funded the best. He also created the Enzyme Technology Newsletter and was the first editor. During his year at the National Science Foundation NSF, he also shared management of the Engineering Chemistry Program with Lewis Mayfield that funded 60 percent of academic research in chemical engineering in the United States at that time.
Presently, Dr. Edwards is the owner and principal consultant at VHE Technical Analysis. He plans to continue consulting others as well as writing and editing papers related to the field of chemical engineering. He is the co-author of “Careers in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering,” a 188-page document published by CRC Press, a member of Chemical Processing Magazine’s editorial board, and was the editor of section 10 of “Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook,” editions eight and nine. In addition to these achievements, Dr. Edwards has held membership with organizations including, but not limited to, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Ninth Global Congress Process Safety, and is currently the councilor of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Houston. In his spare time, Dr. Edwards enjoys reading, tennis, sailing, golfing, sports, following current events, and spending time with his wife Margaret Litzmann as well as his two children, Henry L. Edwards and Mary Elizabeth Ehrichs.
