Merlin J. Ricklefs, Quality Manager (Retired) at IBM, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in strategic planning and new product development.

Mr. Ricklefs started out by earning a BS and MS in engineering from Iowa State University of Science and Technology. From there, he started his first job with IBM, which was like a think tank working closely with research, looking at new and emerging technologies and adapting them to real-world business problems. He evolved through IBM from technical assistant to corporate staff and retired in 1991, after a 31-year career with the company. Since retiring, Mr. Ricklefs has occupied his time as an independent international consultant, visiting professor, and a guest lecturer. He has held a joint position as a 3M McKnight Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a visiting professor of business at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Mr. Ricklefs was the first English-speaking professor invited to present a lecture series to Chinese-speaking students at Chulalongkorn University, where he was a visiting professor from 1996 until 2002.

As a testament to Mr. Ricklefs illustrious career, he has held high level positions as a member of various organizations including but not limited to, being a president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the board of examiners for the Baldrige National Quality Program and the Minnesota Council for Quality Program and a district co-chair for education for Rotary International. He has myriad accolades including, receiving the 2011 Rotary District Service Award, the USA Presidents Volunteer Service Award for Education, a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Commerce and an IBM Award for Excellence, among others.  Mr. Ricklefs has also contributed significant time civically to the Minnesota Orchestra Association, the Rochester Civic Theater, the Rotary District 5960 and the United Way Guarantee Fund.
