Merlin J. Ricklefs, IBM Rochester Site Quality Manager (Retired), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in strategic planning and new product development.
Mr. Ricklefs graduated from Iowa State University of Science and Technology with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in engineering. He started work with IBM Advanced Systems Development Division in Yorktown Heights, New York, a small think tank division of IBM, where experienced staff and new graduates collaborated and worked closely with the IBM Research Division, reviewing new and emerging technologies and adapting them to real-world business problems. His career included the positions of technical assistant to the Rochester site general manager, and IBM corporate director of storage products. After a 31-year career with IBM, Mr. Ricklefs retired and established a second career in 1991 as an independent international consultant, visiting professor, and guest lecturer. He accepted the invitation for a joint position as the 3M McKnight distinguished visiting professor in technology at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and visiting professor of business at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. In 1996, he presented a lecture series and consulted with Thai Airways in Bangkok, Thailand, and from 1998 to 2002, he became visiting professor at the distinguished Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. In 2002 Mr. Ricklefs became a regular guest lecturer in the University of Minnesota China Center Executive MBA Leadership Program and in 2004 was the invited guest speaker at Lingnan College of Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, to help the university celebrate its 80th anniversary. He was the first English-speaking professor to present a lecture series to the Executive MBA students, faculty, and alumni.
As a testament to Mr. Ricklefs’ illustrious career, he has held high level positions as a member of various organizations including but not limited to, being a president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the board of examiners for the Baldrige National Quality Program and the Minnesota Council for Quality Program and a district co-chair for education for Rotary International. He has myriad accolades, including receiving the 2011 Rotary District Service Award, the USA Presidents Volunteer Service Award for Education, a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Commerce, and an IBM Award for Excellence, among others. Mr. Ricklefs has also contributed significant time civically to the Minnesota Orchestra Association, the Rochester Civic Theater, the Rotary District 5960 and the United Way Guarantee Fund.
