Robert Lee Nicholls, Civil engineer, Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of civil engineering.
Growing up in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he experienced a lot of flooding, Dr. Nicholls became interested in the river control aspect of civil engineering. He followed his educational opportunities and had the opportunity to study other areas like soil stabilization and water control. He studied at the University of Colorado and received a Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering, with high honors, in 1951. He went on to earn a Master of Science in civil engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy from Iowa State University before completing postgraduate coursework at Lehigh University, the Stevens Institute, and the University of Colorado.
A registered engineer and a delegate in Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Maryland, Dr. Nicholls has an aircraft pilot license and has worked in design and construction management for aviation airstrips and hangars. Additionally, he currently serves as a consultant for airfield and hangar designs for Engineering Ministries International. Dr. Nicholls embarked on his professional journey as a surveyor for the U.S Geological Survey in 1948, before working as a Survey Instrument Man for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Between 1950 and 1959, he held the positions of a laboratory research assistant, a concrete materials and metal structures inspector, a design engineer and construction supervisor for the U.S. Army Corps Engineers, and as a chief materials engineer and highway design engineer for Gannett & Fleming.
Considering his teaching to be one of his proudest career highlights, Dr. Nicholls began teaching from 1959 to 1993 as a civil engineering professor in Newark, Delaware. He received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the university in 1962 and is a valuable member of the Operations Research Society of America, the International Society Soil Mechanics, the American Concrete Institute, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Knowledgeable in the field, he is the author of “Composite Construction Materials,” “American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Plastics Selection Manual,” and is the co-author of “Civil Engineering Systems.” In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Nicholls has been featured in the seventh and eighth editions of Who’s Who in American Education, the 35th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, and multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the East.
