With nearly 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Thangavelautham has been an engineer, assistant professor, and the head of SpaceTREx at the University of Arizona since 2017. Prior to obtaining his current roles, he was an assistant professor with Arizona State University from 2013 to 2017. Earlier in his career, he was a research associate with the University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies from 2008 to 2009, having been an instructor with the University of Toronto Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program from 2004 to 2006, and he was a software and systems engineer with MDA Space Missions from 2000 to 2001.

Dr. Thangavelautham first pursued an education with the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in engineering science and aerospace in 2002. He continued his studies with the school, earning a PhD in space robotics in 2008. He then joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completing a postdoctoral fellowship in robotics and energy systems in 2013. He is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
