Title: System Safety Engineer (Retired)
Company: SAIC
Location: Houston, Texas, United States

George William Fletcher, Retired System Safety Engineer at SAIC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.

Supported by four decades of experience in engineering, Mr. Fletcher is a retired senior safety engineer who served the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) from 2017 until his retirement in 2020. Delving into safety engineering upon the encouragement of former supervisors, he initially began work as a quality engineering after being interviewed by engineering company representatives while he was a senior in college. Accepting an offer as a quality engineer with the Boeing Company, he served in that capacity for several years before becoming a lead engineer, system safety engineer and information specialist at Calspan Corporation between 1990 and 1995. Soon thereafter, he was a lead system safety engineer and administrative lead for GHG Corporation from 1995 to 2011.  At the end of NASA’s Space Shuttle program, he served as a process safety engineer for Bechtel Oil, Gas & Chemicals from 2011 to 2017.

To prepare for his career, Mr. Fletcher pursued formal education at Texas Tech University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering technology in 1973. Thereafter, he received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Houston in 1985.   He helped his company and NASA navigate through the years of technology changes from typewriters to personal computers.  For 41 years he served tirelessly to ensure that the men and women he helped put into outer space came back alive.  For his contributions to the NASA program and particularly for his work with reviewing radiographs of the NASA Standard Initiator, he also earned the Silver Snoopy Award from NASA, which is awarded to less than 2% of the contractor workforce for outstanding achievement. He attributes his profound success to owing his employer his service, as opposed to believing that his employer owes him a job.

Alongside his professional pursuits, Mr. Fletcher is an avid amateur radio operator and served as an Amateur Radio Emergency Coordinator for Southeast Harris County in Texas for nearly 11 years.  Impressively, he coordinated the efforts of more than 100 amateur radio operators in times of communication emergencies.  Mr. Fletcher is a past president of the Clear Lake Amateur Radio Club, who twice named him Amateur Radio Operator of the Year.

In his spare time, Mr. Fletcher is an active member of the Church of Christ. He is the proud father of three daughters, and he and his wife have six grandchildren. He currently resides in Houston, Texas, and is concentrating on enjoying his retirement.
