John R. Ackerman, PE, PG, BCEE, F.NSPE, F.ASCE, Managing Principal at Twin Oaks Consulting and President of Twin Oaks Water Systems, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental engineering.
While studying as a graduate geologist Mr. Ackerman was approached with an opportunity to work as an environmental engineer, shaping the future of his career in ways he could not imagine. Backed by his BS in earth sciences from the Pennsylvania State University obtained in 1975, Mr. Ackerman now holds multiple patents in the fields of air stripping of liquids and desalination. In his career, he has developed BTEX and toxic metals hazardous waste treatment systems, abandoned mine water and municipal wastewater treatment systems, and oversaw land development for multiple projects. Since 2012 he has served as a consulting engineer for Vita Nuova LLC and as managing partner for Twin Oaks Consulting LLC, and since 2013 has been president of Twin Oaks Water Systems, Inc. Prior to starting his own companies, Mr. Ackerman held positions as the director of public works and City Engineer for the City of Hazleton, the regional environmental manager for HRG, Inc. and the director of operations for CAN DO, Inc. Additionally, between 1976 and 2002, he served in various environmental engineering and managerial roles for companies such as Barry Isett & Associates, Inc., ENTECH Engineering, Inc., Hazleton Environmental, Barrett, Haentjens & Company, and Conyngham Borough Authority.
Notably, Mr. Ackerman was most recently honored with the title of Engineer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers in 2019 and by its Keystone Northeast Chapter in 2019. He was also named the Lehigh Valley Section’s ASCE Engineer of the Year in 2018 and received the ASCE Innovation Conference Award for Best Value in Green Engineering in 2017. A fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and National Society of Professional Engineers, he holds membership with the International Desalination Association and Pennsylvania, president in 2000-01, and National Society of Professional Engineers and since 2000 has sat as chairman of the John Kaminski Memorial Scholarship Committee, part of the Penn-Anthracite Section of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration/AIME, where he also served as chairman for five terms since 1990. To attest to his achievements, Mr. Ackerman may also be found in the 28th edition of Who’s Who In Finance and Industry and the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the East.
