As a child, Mr. Johnson always enjoyed seeing things being built. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1969. Shortly afterward, he became a licensed professional engineer in the state of Iowa. With his newfound credentials, Mr. Johnson was hired as a project engineer at Cullen, Kilby, Carolan & Associates, and remained there until 1981, later moving on to Adrian Carolan & Associates that same year. In 1984, he became the vice president of North Central Consultant, which was followed by a position as an estimator for Teco Constructors. In 1985, Mr. Johnson began working as a city engineer for the city of Rock Island, Illinois, and excelled in the role until his retirement in 2011. However, he continued to work until 2014 as a private consultant.

An esteemed member of his industry, Mr. Johnson maintains affiliations with several professional organizations. These organizations include, but are not limited to, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Public Works Association. His advice to individuals aspiring to pursue careers in engineering would be to find a job that brings them happiness. The key to life, according to Mr. Johnson, is to enjoy going to work every day.
