John Edgar Schaufelberger, PhD, PE, NAC, Professor and Dean Emeritus at University of Washington, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in construction management.

Through STEM programs, Dr. Schaufelberger learned he was more of a quantitative than a qualitative person and pursued a career in engineering. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineer from the University of Idaho in 1964 and further joined the U.S. Army where he excelled for 30 years, retiring as a colonel in 1994. A military officer from 1964 to 1983, Dr. Schaufelberger simultaneously attended the University of Illinois, earning a Master of Science in civil engineering in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering in 1971. Taking his military duties overseas, he was a deputy district engineer for the U.S. Army Engineer District in King Khalid Military City, Saudi Arabia from 1983 to 1985, as well as assistant deputy chief of staff and engineer in Heidelberg, Germany from 1989 to 1992. Additionally, Dr. Schaufelberger was director of the department of military engineering at the U.S. Army Engineering School in Virginia, a district engineer in Texas and a division engineer on the Missouri River in Nebraska. With further experience as a faculty member at the U.S. Military Academy West Point, he taught cadets for three years and found working with young people to be a stimulating and intellectual activity. 

Upon his exit from the military, Dr. Schaufelberger has dedicated his career to academia at the University of Washington for the past 15 years. Since 2019, he has served as a professor in the department of construction management and was named dean emeritus of the College of Built Environments. Earlier, he served the institution as an assistant, associate, and full professor of construction management from 1994 to 2002, chairman of the department from 2002 to 2014, and dean of the College of Built Environments from 2012 to 2019. Finding great success in his endeavors, in 2009, Dr. Schaufelberger was named Educator of the Year by the Mechanical Contractors Association of American and granted the Brian D. Dunfield Educational Service Award from AACE International. The Puget Sound Engineering Council named him Educator of the Year in 2001 and he also holds a Decorated Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Army. An author of numerous books and manuals, Dr. Schaufelberger maintain affiliation with the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, National Academy Construction, Washington Society Professional Engineers, Association of Advancement Cost Engineering and Society Military Engineers. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Schaufelberger can be found in the 63rd and 67th through 70th editions of Who’s Who in America and the 27th edition of Who’s Who in the World.
