With an inclination towards construction, Dr. Khan went on to earn a postgraduate certificate in concrete technology and a Bachelor of Engineering from NED Engineering College in 1961. He then received a Master of Philosophy in structural mechanics from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southampton in 1972. Continuing with his education, he achieved a post-graduate diploma from the Imperial College. Upon completion of his degrees, Dr. Khan became a chartered engineer from M.I.C.E, M.I.E. in Pakistan and became a certified professional engineer in the state of New Jersey.

Dr. Khan began his career in 1981 as a researcher for Northwestern University, staying for one year. From there, he became the founder and chairman of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1999, he took on the role of adjunct faculty at Temple University, staying until 2018. Since 2011, Dr. Khan has been the principal of Dr. Ali Khan & Associate Consulting Engineers. Throughout his career, Dr. Khan has been most proud of developing design codes, which had been changing since the introduction of computers, along with contributing to the building of bridges, dams and power stations. As a testament to his success, he has received a Certificate of Merit from the American Society of Civil Engineers and a Merit Essay Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers in England. He is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in America.
