Rita Rex Smith

Title: Mechanical Engineer

Location: Akron, Ohio, United States

Rita Smith, Mechanical Engineer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership.

Ms. Smith always had a passion for research and is especially proud of the work she has contributed to the field of engineering, specifically with laser optics calculations. She spent time in her career as a researcher with such esteemed institutions as the University of Akron, the University of New Mexico, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In addition, she also worked as a stress engineer in the nuclear equipment division for Babcock & Wilcox and as an application engineer for the McKenzie-Ris Manufacturing Division of the Ecodyne Corp. Ms. Smith was also the owner and managing director of SofTalk Engineer in 1997. Among her many achievements, Ms. Smith has contributed research in optical propagation through turbulence with the addition of an empirical correction for compressibility effects to the turbulence model and use of a transport equation to model the root-mean-square index-of-refraction fluctuations as a passive scalar to further the understanding of how turbulence and optics equations are coupled;, and the development of smoothed particle hydrodynamics algorithm for modeling turbulence analyses.

Notably, Ms. Smith was the sixth woman to graduate with an engineering degree from her alma mater. She first received a BSME from the University of Akron in 1979 and later earned an MSME from the University of New Mexico in 1989. In recognition of her work, Ms. Smith has received numerous grants, such as from the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Ohio Board of Regents. To date, she has been featured among several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World.
