Leslie “Les” R. Barfield, Software Engineer at Digital Equipment, 3Com, and Springtide Networks, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in software.

Mr. Barfield became involved in his profession because from an early age, he noticed that he was very good at mathematics. At that time, he had a choice of either being in an applied science position or a teaching position. When he graduated from Columbia University, he had two outstanding job offers, one of which was with General Electric and their FA team flight systems. That FA team was called the Hornet; it was a very successful line of navy jets. The other was the job at Digital Equipment Corporation, which he ended up taking. Before embarking on his career path, Mr. Barfield earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Bowdoin College. He then received a Master of Science in computer science from Columbia University School of Engineering in 1979.

Mr. Barfield began his career in 1989 as an engineer with the International Division of the Digital Equipment Corporation, where he remained until 1992. While there, he was also a customer service engineer from 1990 to 1993. From there, he joined 3COM Inc. in 1994 and remained until 1998. He held the positions of engineer of the Token Ring Division and senior software engineer of the Switching Division. In 1998, he joined Mapletree Networks as a senior software engineer, remaining for a year. The following three years, he held the position of contractor and lead engineer with Springtide Networks. In 2003, he became a freelance software contractor for the music industry, until he retired in 2017.
