Mr. Powell has always been interested in understanding how things worked. At eight years old, he wanted to understand how engines worked. He always enjoyed working with his hands. Before starting on his career path, he earned an Associate’s Degree in mechanical engineering from Tri-County Technical College in 1976. He also joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and worked with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Upon completion of his degree, Mr. Powell earned numerous certifications in his desired field including a state license from the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in 1992 and a certificate from the American Institute of Plant Engineers in 1992.
Mr. Powell’s highlight of his career was mentoring younger professionals. He enjoyed being able to give the younger professionals hands-on experience so they could grow in the profession. Since 2021, he has been the president and chief executive officer of William Powell, LLC. He has also been a surety consultant and owner’s representative for Beacon Consulting Group, LLC since 2019. Previously, he was a construction executive of the southeast for Kirlin Builders, LLC from 2002 to 2019 and senior project manager for John J. Kirlin, Inc. from 1997 to 2002. As a testament to his success, Mr. Powell was inducted as a member of the Project Management Institute, NFPA and as an associate member of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers.
