James T. Veligdan, program manager at Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in optical engineering.
For over 40 years, Mr. Veligdan has found success as a research scientist working in the fields of optical physics and lasers. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973 and 1979 respectively. Eager to make a difference in the field, he began his career as a research engineer at Westinghouse Research and Development Laboratory in Pittsburgh between 1974 and 1985. With 50 U.S. patents and 200 worldwide patents, he is renowned for notable scientific developments pertaining to the means and methods for characterizing high power, the apparatus and methods behind the laser deposition of durable coatings, the means of optical pressure and density measuring and the methods of the vehicle security apparatus. Additionally, he assembled the precision laser surveying instrument using atmospheric turbulence compensation by determining the absolute displacement between two laser beam components.
In addition, Mr. Veligdan is credited with the creation of the The Polyplanar Optical Display, which is a high contrast display screen developed for cockpit applications. For his invention, he was honored to have received recognition from the mayor of New York City. Moreover, he is proud to have been the recipient of the Best of What’s New Award from Popular Science, the Award for Technological Innovation from Discover Magazine and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
