Since 1984, Ms. Snipes has provided superior service as a senior materials engineer with TEC (Technology for Energy Corporation), an employee-owned company based in Knoxville, Tennessee, that designs and manufactures diagnostic instruments for four diverse industries: aviation, materials testing, nuclear products and electric power.
Ms. Snipes prepared for her later career by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in materials engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh in 1977 and continued her education with a master’s degree in material science from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1980. She served as a technician in the engineering and research Services Division at North Carolina State from 1974 to 1977 and as an engineer with Babcock and Wilcox Enterprises Inc. from 1977 to 1982.
Ms. Snipes has served as chair and vice-chair of the American Society of Metals (ASM) International, on the executive committee of the ASM Oak Ridge Chapter, and the ASM Residual Stress Technical Committee. In addition, she has been a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Society for Experimental Mechanics, the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing and the American Welding Society.
As a career highlight, Ms. Snipes cites her contributions to making X-ray diffraction devices. In the coming years, she would like to devote more time to her farm where she raises horses and cattle. Once retired from TEC, she would work the farm full-time and make it fully viable.
