David Soukup, Managing Director at American Society of Mechanical Engineers, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in administration.

For over 30 years, Mr. Soukup has provided superior service with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), an American professional association that promotes the art, science, and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe via continuing education, training and professional development, codes and standards, research, conferences and publications, government relations and other forms of outreach. He flourished as the managing director of operations from 1988 to 2005, managed engineering education, public awareness, professional practice, volunteer leadership and diversity activities from 2005 to 2011, and has managed ASME’s volunteer/staff partnership for nine committees responsible for corporate governance, ethics, scholarships and officer nomination and training since 2011.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in systems engineering from the University of Arizona in 1976, Mr. Soukup continued his education with a Master of Science in industrial engineering from the  University of Tennessee in 1981. With The Tau Beta Pi Association, the oldest engineering honor society and the second oldest collegiate honor society in the United States, he excelled as assistant secretary-treasurer from 1976 to 1984, managing staff support for annual fund-raising campaign whose revenue increased from $159,000 to $405,000 per year and developed membership marketing materials that attracted over 12,000 new members annually. As the associate director of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers from 1984 to 1988, Mr. Soukup conducted direct-mail and corporate fund raising and worked as the staff manager for industry advisory board, academic department heads board and research council.

Mr. Soukop attributes his success to his father, who recognizes the value of STEM education. He was also mentored by David Belden, his manager both at the Institute of Industrial Engineers and at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Thomas Costabile, the current executive director of American Society of Association Executives. The highlight of Mr. Soukop’s career was implementing innovative quantitative applications for associations and pioneering the use of multi-criteria decision making. In coming years, he intends to retire from his full-time job but will still teach part-time and perform occasional work for the aforementioned association.
