John Raymond Tillinghast

Title: Senior Transportation Engineer
Company: Jacobs Engineering Group
Location: Burleson, Texas, United States

John Tillinghast, Senior Transportation Engineer at Jacobs Engineering Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering management.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1989, Mr. Tillinghast provided superior service as a transportation engineer with the Texas Department of Transportation in Fort Worth from 1989 to 2018. Beginning in 2017, he has excelled as senior transportation engineer with Jacobs Engineering Group in Fort Worth, a premier technical professional services firm providing technical, professional and construction services as well as scientific and specialty consulting for a broad range of clients. His areas of expertise include highway and transportation engineering, roadway design, traffic control, drainage design and civil engineering.

With Jacobs, Mr. Tillinghast is responsible for quality assurance and quality control review, assisting project managers in dealing with Texas Department of Transportation and mentoring young engineers and engineering students. His professional memberships include the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, and he has been recognized as a team member by the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and an award recipient from the Texas Department of Transportation.

Mr. Tillinghast attributes his success to his strong faith and maintains that he was inspired to enter the engineering profession, specifically road building, at a young age playing with Tonka toy trucks in his grandparents’ garden. He maintains that his career highlight has been mentoring young highway engineers. Formerly, much of the engineering work with the Texas Department of Transportation was manually done and hand-calculated, which allowed engineers at the time to understand the process, whereas today engineering students today rely on computer programs without comprehending how to arrive at results shown by the programs. Thus, they are often unable to detect if the programs are yielding incorrect answers, a gap that Mr. Tillinghast easily addresses with his 35 years of experience in the field.

Additionally, Mr. Tillinghast notes with pride that he was the project manager for clearing Interstate 35W from downtown almost to the Fort Worth Alliance Airport (AFW). It was a difficult clearing project, environmentally speaking, with billions of dollars’ worth of construction work that took many years to complete. He was responsible for securing document and schematics approval for the managed lane projects in the Fort Worth side of the metroplex.

Mr. Tillinghast plans to retire in 10 years. His focus is on his adopted daughter, who lives in Texas City and is becoming a civil engineer. The greatest professional joy he can have would be to see her graduate and find a stellar job. Though he and his wife plan to move to Galveston in a few years, he plans to remain with Jacobs and continue passing on his knowledge to the next generation of experts in his field.
