Debesh Chandra Sarkar, MSc, PE, Senior Structural Engineer at the North Carolina Department of Transportation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in structural engineering.
In preparation for his career as a civil engineer, Mr. Sarkar attended Calcutta University in India, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. After immigrating to the United States in 1971, he completed a Master of Science in architectural technology at Columbia University in 1974. Since 2001, Mr. Sarkar has found success as a senior structural engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He attributes his success to the work ethic his parents instilled in him, as his father was a university professor in India and his mother encouraged him to travel to the United States to further his higher education.
Among Mr. Sarkar’s career highlights, he considers designing a plant for the tire manufacturing giant Goodyear to be his most notable accomplishment. He designed every aspect of the plant and it now produces 50,000 tires per day. Goodyear even copied his design exactly and produced a second plant next to the first. To keep abreast of developments in his field, Mr. Sarkar maintains membership in the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Professional Engineers of North Carolina, and the Professional Engineers of Pennsylvania. In his spare time, he enjoys volunteering with Neighbor to Neighbor. In the coming years, Mr. Sarkar hopes to continue his work with the OAM Foundation which he founded.
