Joseph Antoun Seif, co-founder and principal engineer at Bryte Designs, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering and design.
Specializing in timber design, cross-laminated timber, and mass timber, Mr. Seif focused on this area of expertise citing the advantages of working with mass timber—that it reduces the carbon print of a building and is visually pleasing. He is most distinguished in the industry for creating his own concept of building lamella structures, which are comprised of short, curved beams. His job as a timber engineer is to join 20-foot pieces and create a 100-foot arch that interlocks them. Thus, Mr. Seif designed the connections and executed his unique installation.
At Bryte Designs, founded in 1999, Mr. Seif is responsible for leading the engineering and design team whose scope of work involves mass timber structural design, shop drawings, 3D modeling, connections design, fabrication drawings, and field installation. Keeping in mind his motto to never give up, he and the team take pride in tackling and completing projects that other engineers initially thought were too difficult and unachievable, for example, the Gore Meadows Community Centre and Library for which they received industry and public praise.
When Mr. Seif begins a project, he says it becomes a part of him until he completes it. As a result, he and the Bryte Designs team continually evolve professionally and have been recognized for timber design and installation by the woodwork industry. The company’s work is centered in Ontario, but in the coming years, Mr. Seif and his team plan to expand into eastern provinces, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
A certified professional engineer and member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario, Mr. Seif prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in civil engineering from the University of Toronto. He fondly recalls being inspired and encouraged to join the profession by his father and mentor, a contractor who worked on concrete frames for buildings. As a youth, Mr. Seif became familiar with and interested in structural engineering and the construction industry while accompanying his father to work sites. Today, professedly passionate about his craft, he seeks to inspire and motivate future generations of engineers.
