Robert P.S. With over 40 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Upson has excelled as deputy fire marshal for the town of New Hartford, Connecticut since 2002. Concurrently, he served as fire protection engineer III at Amentum Services, Inc. since 2019 and qualified fire protection engineer at Savannah River Mission Completion since 2022. He began his career as a firefighter with SFD Engine Company #4 from 1982 to 1986. He worked as an emergency medical technician at Mansfield Volunteer Fire Company from 1983 to 1986. He contributed at the University of Connecticut as a database manager and a research assistant from 1983 to 1986. 

Mr. Upson held the role of adjunct professor at the Wolcott Regional Fire Training School from 1989 to 1994 and the Connecticut Fire Academy from 1989 to 1999. In Southington, Connecticut, he was active as an emergency medical technician from 1986 to 2013 and as a career firefighter from 1986 to 2013. He was appointed to the role of manager of engineering services at the National Fire Sprinkler Association from 2013 to 2019 before transitioning to AECOM as a fire protection engineer III from 2019 to 2020. He was further associated with the Connecticut Incident Management Team 3 as deputy planning section chief from 2011 to 2021 and with Savannah River Remediation as a qualified fire protection engineer II from 2019 to 2022.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Upson pursued an education at the University of Connecticut where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1984. He continued his academic efforts at Charter Oak State College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in fire science technology. He concluded his studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a Master of Science in fire protection engineering in 2014. He holds 11 certifications including as a fire marshal, a safety officer, and a hazardous materials technician.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Upson has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He found success with his 16 written works which he authored or co-authored and for Meyer Fire, the National Fire Sprinkler Association, and Your Shift Matters Publishing. In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Upson has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was recognized as Firefighter of the Year by the Elks Lodge and presented with the Public Service Award by the Connecticut Secretary of the State. He received a certificate of appreciation from the American National Red Cross and was a recipient of the Andrew J. Flanagan Memorial Scholarship.
