Dr. Ekeng-Itua’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Engineering in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Nigeria. She continued her studies with a Master of Science in mobile and satellite communications engineering from the University of Surrey. Making groundbreaking strides, she became the first Black woman to attain a PhD in cybernetics, completing her doctoral studies at the University of Reading.

In her professional tenure, Dr. Ekeng-Itua’s career commenced with pivotal roles that underscore her commitment to education and technological advancement. She served as chair, program leader, and senior lecturer in engineering at the University of West London from 2004 to 2012. Transitioning to the United States, she assumed the role of associate professor of engineering and lead faculty at Ohlone College from 2013 to 2018. Her illustrious career has been punctuated by accolades, including the Best Teaching Award from the American Society for Engineering Education Pacific Southwest Section and the Faculty of the Year Award from Ohlone College.

Dr. Ekeng-Itua’s influence extends beyond academia as she embarked on a journey as a visiting research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2014 and 2016. Following this, she has been instrumental in driving educational initiatives at Ohlone College since 2018, serving as professor of engineering and founding program lead for the Smart Manufacturing Technology Program. Simultaneously, she has undertaken significant civic engagements, serving as a commissioner on the Economic Development Advisory Commission for the City of Fremont since 2022. She has also made significant contributions to professional organizations, such as the Society of Women Engineers, where she held leadership positions and founded the African Technology and Innovation Institute. Dr. Ekeng-Itua’s unwavering dedication to education, innovation, and community engagement continues to inspire and shape the future of engineering and technology.
