Zhong “Nick” Ren, principal software engineer at Actio Biosciences, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biotechnology.

With 13 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Ren has excelled as principal software engineer at Actio Biosciences, Inc. since 2023. In his role, he participates in building a platform for performing internal analysis. He worked at the same as a consultant from 2022 to 2023. He began his career as a research assistant at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2011 to 2012.

Mr. Ren established himself as a bioinformatician at the Center for Genomic Variation, now the Duke Center for Genomic and Computational Biology, at Duke University School of Medicine from 2012 to 2014. At the Institute for Genomic Medicine at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, he contributed as a big data software developer from 2015 to 2017, a staff associate from 2017 to 2021, a senior staff associate from 2021 to 2022, and director of software and data engineering from 2022 to 2023.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Ren pursued an education at Shenzhen University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and computer science in 2009. He concluded his studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, graduating with a Master of Science in computer science in 2012. Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He found success with his written work “ATAV: A Comprehensive Platform for Population-Scale Genomic Analyses,” which he co-authored in 2021.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Ren has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was awarded second prize for the development of an intelligence testing system at the Guangdong Province Challenge Cup Competition in 2009. He developed the ATAV platform, which is used for genomic analysis and helps scientists conduct more effective research. Thousands of patients at Columbia University Irving Medical Center have benefited from this platform which has helped discover new genes.

In the immediate future, Mr. Ren intends to expand his role within the organization and transform it into a successful discovery company. Currently, he is studying artificial intelligence-driven applications to apply the solutions to precision medicine and hopes to build a system at Actio Biosciences, Inc. to identify genes associated with diseases that will aid in drug discovery.
