Since 2008, he has served as a nuclear and criticality safety engineer at CPCCo, following a tenure as lead criticality safety engineer at Fluor Corporation from 2003 to 2013. His expertise and contributions extend beyond his professional roles. He is a contributing author to the New ANS Standard 8.28 by the American Nuclear Society and a member of the ANS since the 1990s.

Mr. Winkel attributes his success to his fundamental drive, which was instilled during his time at the Colorado School of Mines. Despite initial struggles, his professors imparted the confidence to tackle the toughest challenges. His involvement in nuclear engineering stemmed from his background and experience, leading the federal government to enlist his expertise for over 20 years. One highlight of his career is his pivotal role in eliminating the risk of hazardous nuclear sites, including Building 771 in Rocky Flats and the Plutonium Finishing Plant Complex at the Hanford site.

Looking ahead, Mr. Winkel aims to transition into consulting during retirement, leveraging his wealth of experience and knowledge. Throughout his career, he has observed significant changes in the field, foreseeing the increasing influence of AI and the necessity of IT education. He advises aspiring nuclear engineers to pursue a Master of Business Administration for its business approach and emphasizes the field’s potential for making a significant environmental impact.
