Beginning his career at Chevron, Mr. Buell has served in numerous roles, including base business manager from 2006 to 2012, engineer from 1994 to 1996, production superintendent from 1991 to 1994 and rig supervisor from 1986 to 1987. His extensive experience encompasses managing production forecasting for Chevron’s Southern Africa Business Unit, overseeing well service operations and leading substantial engineering and research projects. His professional journey is complemented by previous roles at the Potential Gas Agency and Gas Research Institute from 1984 to 1986, Petro-Lewis from 1981 to 1984, Gulf in 1981 and Union Oil of California from 1980 to 1981.

Mr. Buell’s professional journey included pivotal roles in Indonesia, where he developed new oil fields over a span of five and a half years, and in Angola, where he worked on both deep and shallow water offshore projects for almost a decade. Additionally, his work in the United States focused on thermal heavy oil and water flooding projects across several states. A dedicated member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers since 1978, he has been recognized as a distinguished lecturer multiple times and has delivered lectures worldwide. His extensive research and practical applications in the field have left a lasting legacy of expertise and excellence in the petroleum industry.

Mr. Buell’s academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in petroleum engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, where he also completed a second master’s degree in mineral economics. His theses, focused on oil and gas drilling activity indicators and the injectivity of non-Newtonian fluids, have underscored his scholarly contributions to the field. He is also a certified decision analysis expert, a registered professional engineer, and a certified API Q1/ISO 9001 auditor and inspector.

Throughout his career, Mr. Buell has achieved numerous milestones that underscore his dedication and innovative spirit. He has been at the forefront of technological advancements in the petroleum industry, notably as a pioneer in fiber optics. His work has led to the development of patents and methods for visualizing and monitoring high-temperature wells, achieving significant breakthroughs in materials able to withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. He was also recognized for his contributions to the Society of Petroleum Engineers as a distinguished lecturer since 2017.

Mr. Buell is also actively involved in his community, supporting organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the Freedom from Religion Foundation. His pursuits include his passion for personal challenges, exemplified by his ambitious “the 28” challenge, which includes running marathons, cycling, skiing across all seven continents and climbing some of the world’s highest peaks.
