With decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Matzie has excelled as an executive consultant and the president of RAMatzie Nuclear Technology Consulting, LLC since 2009. In addition to this position, he has found success as the treasurer of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, a member of the executive advisory board for Kairos Power, and a member of the science advisory board for the Canadian Nuclear Laboratory. He previously worked as the vice president of nuclear systems engineering for ABB Combustion Engineering from 1993 to 1998, the vice president of nuclear systems for ABB Combustion Engineering from 1998 to 2000, and both senior vice president and chief technology officer for Westinghouse Electric Company from 2002 to 2009. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Matzie served his country in the submarine force with the U.S. Navy, completing five years of active duty before retiring at the rank of Captain after a 25-year tenure in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Matzie pursued an education at the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1965. He continued his studies with a Master of Science in nuclear engineering at Stanford University in 1971. Dr. Matzie concluded his studies at Stanford University in 1976, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Matzie has accrued several accolades throughout his career, such as the Reactor Technology Award from The American Nuclear Society in 2005, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Westinghouse Electric Company in 2009, the John M. Landis Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2010, and the Walter H. Zinn Medal from the American Nuclear Society in 2016. He attributes his success to his willingness to take risky assignments, his passion for technology, and his outgoing nature, which enables him to more easily build relationships. Among the highlights of his career, he is proud of leading the design and licensing of ABB Combustion Engineering’s System 80+advanced light water reactor in Washington, D.C. Looking toward the future, Dr. Matzie hopes to dedicate more time to his family while conducting consulting work with people and organizations with whom he has been associated for years.
