Title: Senior Engineer (Retired)
Company: CERN
Location: Batavia, Illinois, United States
Manfred Wendt, senior engineer (retired) at CERN, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering academia and research.
With four decades of experience, Mr. Wendt has established a distinguished career in engineering, specializing in electrical engineering, electrodes, linear accelerators, and research. Although he retired in 2023, he continues to contribute as a senior engineer with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). In this role, he teaches young Ph.D. students and conducts research. Throughout his career as a senior engineer, he focused primarily on education and what he refers to as “exotic engineering,” which involved tackling complex and unique engineering challenges. Prior to retirement, Mr. Wendt served as an electrical engineer for Beam Diagnostics and as section leader at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 2012 to 2023. He was also the head of the AD Instrumentation Department at Fermilab from 2005 to 2012 and worked as an electrical engineer and deputy group leader at DESY in Germany from 1985 to 2005.
During his time at CERN, Mr. Wendt played a pivotal role in witnessing and contributing to a momentous occasion—the birth of the Internet. Before 1989, the Internet as we now know it was merely a concept. However, that year, a group of visionaries within the high-energy physics community at CERN came together to develop the HTTP protocol, initially intended for data exchange between laboratories, which would later evolve into the World Wide Web. He passionately believes that the groundbreaking research underway in laboratories today will undoubtedly shape the future for generations to come, as with him and his team.
Mr. Wendt has also contributed through his creative works, including authoring “A Brief Introduction to Beam Position Monitors for Charged Particle Accelerators” for the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement (I&M) Society in 2021, and co-authoring “Digital Signal Processing for Bunched Beam Intensity Measurement” for the Beam Instrumentation Workshop in 2012. In addition, he has co-authored numerous articles in research and professional journals and has been an invited speaker and reviewer at conferences, workshops, and events worldwide. Laying a solid foundation for his future success, he earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University for Applied Science in Hamburg, Germany, in 1984, and completed coursework at the Distance University of Hagen in Germany.
Mr. Wendt attributes his success primarily to his active participation in conferences and educational programs. Attending numerous workshops and conferences and engaging in events like open days has broadened his perspective. He believes his contributions have been most impactful through these conferences and, more recently, educational programs. Regarding the scientific aspect, he has found success in publishing papers in journals and presenting at conferences.
In the coming years, Mr. Wendt’s goals include continuing to teach and be involved in accelerator R&D internationally, particularly in Asia. Although officially retired from CERN, his passion for contributing and collaborating has not diminished. As an active retiree, he maintains his computing access and works closely with his colleagues at the organization. He is exploring future opportunities in the United States, considering potential roles with Fermilab or Brookhaven. In fact, he is scheduled to visit Brookhaven next week to discuss potential collaborations and contribute his expertise. With a strong intention to keep working for another one or two years, consulting and taking on new projects are important priorities for him.
