Title: Solutions Architect
Company: Schneider Electric
Location: Columbus, Ohio, United States
Nathaniel R. Dunn, BEng, MBA, solutions architect at Schneider Electric, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the energy sector.
With over a decade and a half of experience to his credit, Mr. Dunn has established a successful career in electrical engineering, specializing in transmission and generation metering. He currently excels as a solutions architect at Schneider Electric, a role he has held since 2023. In this capacity, he is responsible for customer support for ion meter users, helps customers with detailed troubleshooting, communication issues, meter and software for configuration, and power monitoring systems. He also handles RTU questions and interfaces with the PCA group for relay questions. His prior experience includes sales engineer and Mid-West utility account executive with Schneider Electric from 2020 to 2023, and senior engineer with American Electric Power from 2007 to 2020.
Additionally, he has been a presenter in his field, covering various topics, including power quality, lost compensation, and substation metering, at schools nationwide. His memberships include the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and he dedicates his time to the Oasis City Church, Africa Renewal Ministries, and Children’s Relief International. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Trine University in 2007, followed by a Master of Business Administration from the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University in 2012.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Dunn developed an interest in power engineering during college. His enthusiasm grew under the mentorship of a professor specializing in power systems, inspiring him to participate in numerous relevant courses. During this time, he recognized his aspiration to pursue a career in the utility field. After completing his college education, he joined American Electric Power, a prominent industrial utility company in Ohio, where he started his career in the meter operations group, working in transmission engineering. Over 12 years, he gained valuable experience before moving to Schneider Electric four years ago.
Mr. Dunn’s most notable achievement is leading the metering upgrade process at AEP, which involved transitioning from electromechanical meters to digital devices. Due to the variety of data collection systems used, each job was unique and required a customized approach. However, the implementation of standards for transmission metering and intermediate communication streamlined the process. The enhanced communication between meters allowed for the precise allocation of loads between units, ensuring accurate net generation calculations for each unit. The real-time data was then fed into the control system or SCADA system, significantly improving the power plant’s efficiency and marking a major accomplishment for Mr. Dunn.
Mr. Dunn attributes his success to his willingness to learn, a quality that he believes helped him excel at AEP by enabling him to broaden his focus beyond just metering. He took the initiative to understand the company’s data collection systems and how different features work together to achieve optimal results. In the coming years, he aims to expand his knowledge of software offerings and related products, with the goal of advancing to a management role where he can oversee products and provide support to colleagues in his current position. His immediate objective is to become highly proficient in his area of expertise, and he is eager to learn from industry professionals with more experience than he has. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family, playing guitar, fishing, camping, watching movies, and playing games.
