Over a career of 45 years, Dr. Perl built up an esteemed reputation as an engineer and expert in physics. He retired from his role as a senior consulting engineer at Northrup Robbin, having made a noteworthy impact on multiple organizations. Among other career highlights, Dr. Perl served as an engineer for General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems from 2005 to 2006. During this time, he contributed as the chief engineer for the company’s underwater systems department. Dr. Perl’s early career includes taking on the position of engineer Radix Systems from 1987 to 1988. He started his professional life as an engineer with BBN Technologies in 1980.
In addition to his work in the private sector, Dr. Perl has long been associated with the United States military. He joined the Navy in the midst of the Vietnam War while attending college. During this period, Dr. Perl became well-regarded for his ability to locate enemy aircraft and submarines using his background in mathematical physics. One of his greatest accomplishments was locating a hidden Russian submarine in 1976. Proud of his service, Dr. Perl was excited to have the opportunity to work with the Navy once more for five years beginning in 2000.
To set himself up for success, Dr. Perl pursued a strong academic foundation. He initially planned to attend Yale University, but the Vietnam War made that impossible. Instead, Dr. Perl obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1968. Subsequently, he earned a PhD in physics from the University of Maryland in 1972.
Dr. Perl views his education as a fundamental element of his career achievements. In particular, he emphasizes the importance of math as something that’s often overlooked in the engineering industry. Dr. Perl considers mathematics to be the center of the engineering discipline, and his mastery of it to be the trait that most set him apart from other engineers throughout his professional life. He also credits his passion for working with and learning from others, firm in his belief that every person has a lesson to offer.
As part of staying on top of the latest advancements in engineering, Dr. Perl has joined industry-related organizations. Though retired, he remains active with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Dr. Perl has also garnered several awards for his work. Most prominently, he is a two-time recipient of the New Technology Award from Northrup Robbin.
Now retired, Dr. Perl is embracing his role as a dedicated husband, father to two and grandfather to six. His favorite pastime is reading. Dr. Perl’s plans for the future revolve entirely around spending more time with his family. Having contributed so much to his field, he now intends to make sure his children and grandchildren are set up to experience the same long-term success he has.
