Professor Sandipan Mishra, Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mechanical engineering.

With over two decades of experience, Dr. Mishra has built a distinguished career in engineering, specializing in autonomy, mechanical engineering, robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, and high-performance manufacturing. Since 2023, he has served as a program officer and expert appointment at the National Science Foundation and has been a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 2022. His work includes teaching dynamics, control systems, and mechatronics while researching autonomy, focusing on autonomous aerial vehicles, smart buildings, and 3D printing. Previously, he held roles at Rensselaer, including associate professor from 2016 to 2022 and assistant professor from 2010 to 2016. He has also contributed to professional organizations, serving as chair of the technical committee on mechatronics for ASME and chair of the curriculum committee for controls and dynamics at Rensselaer. He co-invented the collaborative energy management system in 2021 and developed high-resolution sensing and control for electrohydrodynamic jet printing in 2014.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Mishra was honored with the Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Dynamic Systems and Control Division in 2019, as well as the James M. Tien ’66 Early Career Award from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that same year. He also received the Class of 1951 Outstanding Teaching Award from Rensselaer in 2015 and the Early Career Award from the United States National Science Foundation in 2013. He laid a solid educational foundation earning a Bachelor of Technology in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008. His passion for mechanical engineering began in high school, where his fascination with watches and desire to create a self-sustaining watch inspired his career path. He takes great pride in the success of his students, many of whom are making remarkable contributions in their fields. Additionally, earning prestigious accolades like the Early Career Award and the Outstanding Young Investigator Award has been a significant source of personal pride for him.

In advising aspiring professionals, Dr. Mishra believes his success comes from an unwavering commitment to excellence and a determination to give his all in every endeavor. He stresses the importance of making a positive impact, whether by helping a single individual or pursuing larger-scale goals. His focus remains on the task at hand, driving him to accomplish what he sets out to do. In the coming years, he is dedicated to identifying safety protocols for artificial intelligence systems to prevent unintended harm. This issue intrigues him both scientifically and from a leadership perspective, which led to his appointment at the United States National Science Foundation. He hopes to expand his role within the organization, given its pivotal influence on the future direction of scientific research and innovation.
