John D. Phillips, Retired Senior Fellow at FCA US LLC / Stellantis, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Professional for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the Automotive Industry.
Mr. Phillips recently retired from Stellantis in 2024 as a senior fellow. Having worked for one of the largest automakers in the world, which underwent numerous mergers throughout history, he was pivotal in leveraging his expertise in automotive calibration, emissions regulations, internal combustion engines, product development and launching, and accelerated life testing to positively impact the organization.
Today, Mr. Phillips remains a consultant at John-Phillips.com, which he established in 2024. His firm focuses on work related to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Despite previously concentrating his career on internal combustion engines, he now utilizes his expertise in new product launches for internal combustion engines to develop and launch BEVs. Mr. Phillips’s success and tenure in product development and the launch processes have been invaluable.
Before joining Stellantis in 2022, Mr. Phillips was a senior professional at FCA US LLC for over a decade, beginning in 2014. He also worked for Delphi as a senior staff research engineer from 2003 to 2014 after being recognized as a Six Sigma master black belt between 2001 and 2007. Earlier in his career, he served as a Shainin red master at Delphi between 1996 and 1997 and as an engineering manager from 1998 to 2000. Additionally, Mr. Phillips was an engineer with Delco Remy, where he devoted over 20 years between 1974 and 1997.
Mr. Phillips chose to pursue a career in the automotive industry due to his early passion for automobiles. Before earning his master’s degree, his early experience included working as a manufacturing engineer for companies like GMI and General Motors (GM). At GM, he helped produce maintenance-free batteries while managing the launch of five manufacturing plants for their production. Before these foundational roles, Mr. Phillips was a GM fellow at Stanford University while pursuing his master’s degree. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to a product engineer. This position began his long and established career in developing automotive products.
Highly educated, Mr. Phillips garnered a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in electrical engineering from Kettering University and Stanford University in 1978 and 1985, respectively. Active in his professional community, he is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society for Quality. He has also become recognized for co-authoring an article, ‘ECU Software Abnormal Behavior Detection Based on Mahala Nobis Taguchi Technique.’
In light of his professional success, Mr. Phillips has been recognized for his instrumental contributions to launching various automotive projects, including Jeeps, Ram trucks and other pickup trucks, where he was critical in the continuous stream of new models being evaluated and refined to meet customer demand. Mr. Phillips was also named a Rolling Top Five Manager by Shannon LLC. Furthermore, he has secured numerous U.S. patents in his area of expertise for diesel emissions and ignition coil manufacturing.
Mr. Phillips credits his accomplishments to promptly addressing issues that require immediate attention and being proactive rather than reactive. He also notes several mentors. Eager for future advancements in his industry, Mr. Phillips has been concentrating on the development phase and ensuring that once the vehicles he is working on are available for sale, they are reliable and meet regulatory requirements.
