Additionally, he served as an information systems technology expert at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn from 1993 to 1996, senior software engineer at CDI Computer Services in Dearborn from 1992 to 1993, tenured associate professor in industrial and manufacturing systems engineering at the University of Michigan from 1990 to 1992, and assistant professor at the University of Michigan from 1984 to 1990.

Dr. Thomasma has also contributed significantly as a volunteer, building and deploying a donor management system and implementing a PLATO computer-based learning system. He assisted several community members from Ethiopia in obtaining their GED using the PLATO system and served as chairman of the customer council for the Open Applications Group from 2001 to 2002. Additionally, he taught computing to students in the youth program of Voice of Calvary Ministries from 1982 to 1984. Laying a strong educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Calvin University in 1976, a Master of Science in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1977, and a PhD in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan in 1983.

Reflecting on his path, Dr. Thomasma takes great pride in his time at Ford Motor Company, which was marked by transformative contributions to manufacturing systems and enterprise architecture that enhanced the company’s competitiveness and operational efficiency. At General Motors, one of his key projects involved managing vehicle software systems, including critical components such as brakes, engine controls, and radios. Leading a dedicated team, he resolved systemic issues and implemented software management programs that improved efficiency and reliability across GM’s vehicle ecosystem. His achievements also include pioneering the use of polymorphism and inheritance in object-oriented programming languages for the creation of simulation program generators, enabling manufacturing engineers to construct accurate computer models. In light of these impressive undertakings, he has been honored with the Rinck Memorial Award from Calvin College in 1976 and recognition as a DeVlieg Foundation Fellow in 1980 and 1981. He attributes his success to the support and collaboration of individuals who listened to his ideas and offered valuable assistance.
