Since 2021, he has served as senior engineering manager of EC2 capacity at Amazon Web Services, where he leads the EC2 Capacity team responsible for delivering and managing the core infrastructure of the world’s largest cloud computing platform. In this role, he collaborates with vice presidents and directors to align yearly roadmaps, manages near real-time services overseeing over $100 million in EC2 server supply and demand, and has developed new services with research scientists and data engineers to optimize capacity utilization, achieving annual savings of more than $70 million. His prior experience includes roles such as senior vice president of engineering at Optoro in 2021 and various leadership and engineering positions at Optoro, AOL, and ZipList from 2005 to 2021.

Mr. Herrup’s expertise spans mobile and web product development, user interface design, and advanced systems architecture. Among his most notable accomplishments is securing a patent for methods and apparatus for managing a universal list system in 2013. He has also successfully scaled engineering teams, implemented a SOC 2 strategy, migrated organizations to Kubernetes, and significantly improved throughput for global systems. By emphasizing agile practices, testing, and continuous deployment, he refined communication between engineering and business teams, achieving a 99.95% uptime metric. Additionally, he has empowered globally distributed technical teams to innovate and deliver high-quality solutions, ensuring alignment with customer and stakeholder expectations.

Laying a solid educational foundation, Mr. Herrup earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2004 and a master’s degree in computer science with a focus on security and graphics in 2005, both from The George Washington University. He is an active donor to charitable organizations, has organized Arlington Ruby since 2011, and served as a board member for the Washington National Opera’s Generation O. He attributes his success to fostering supportive, diverse teams where unique perspectives thrive.
