James E. Engel, Retired Principal Material and Processes Engineer at Boeing Space and Defense Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Aerospace.

Mr. Engel is distinguished for his contributions to aerospace, having retired from Boeing Defense, Space & Security in Huntington Beach, California, after serving two decades as a principal material and processes engineer for non-destructive testing from 1997 to 2016. His responsibilities included developing methods to test materials for advanced products, propulsion and thermal protection systems, pressure vessels, composite materials, metals and welding. He also supported new programs and conducted research and development activities. Before his tenure at Boeing, Mr. Engel was an engineering specialist, focusing on quality assurance and non-destructive evaluation at General Dynamics’ space systems, energy and Convair divisions in San Diego between 1984 and 1996. He also held positions with Braun Intertec and Lakehead Testing Laboratory, dating back to 1973.

A graduate of Ridgewater College, Mr. Engel received an associate of applied science in NDT/metals testing technology in 1973. He later acquired a Bachelor of Science in engineering technology at Saint Cloud State University in 1983 and a Master of Science from the Institute of Safety and Systems Management at the University of Southern California in 1989. Moreover, Mr. Engel holds a professional credential in entrepreneurial management from San Diego State University since 1996. Throughout his remarkable tenure in the industry, he has maintained membership in several professional organizations, including the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), and is the former chair, vice chair, and secretary of the San Diego section of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing.

Among Mr. Engel’s most notable career accomplishments, Mr. Engel developed methods to test materials for use in advanced products, such as thermal protection system testing and ultrasonic phased-array testing for friction stir welds. He also contributed to forums and conferences hosted by Boeing, NASA, ASNT, and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), where he authored papers and made presentations. Additionally, he collaborated with ASTM, where he wrote specifications that are used worldwide and have since become recognized as industry standards. Mr. Engel has notably invented a dozen different patents throughout his career. In recognition of his success and tenure, he received the Meritorious Invention Disclosure Award, the Spirit of Cook Award, and numerous Certificate Awards from Boeing, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation Award from NASA, General Dynamics, and the American Society for Testing and Materials, and a 50-Year Member Recognition Award from the ASNT. Mr. Engel’s expertise in nondestructive testing, ultrasonic testing, phased-array ultrasonic techniques, radiographic methods, and, among other areas of the field, electromagnetic current testing to much of his success.
