Mr. Wheeler has enjoyed a long and successful career in systems engineering, marked by a series of significant accomplishments and contributions that date back 45 years. Since 2019, he has been the architecture analytics project lead at MITRE in Huntsville, Alabama. In this role, he utilizes model-based systems engineering software to streamline and enhance the workflow of projects. His expertise extends to advising on best practices and initiating innovative projects. Lauded in the industry, Mr. Wheeler consistently delivers high-quality results through his comprehensive approach, demonstrating a profound understanding of systems engineering principles and their practical applications.
Before his current position, Mr. Wheeler was a principal systems engineer at Information Exchange Systems Inc. (INEXSYS) from 2018 to 2019, after initially owning the company between 1994 and 2019. His tenure at INEXSYS was preceded by his role as a systems engineer manager and corporate advisory board representative at Wyle (now KBR Inc.) from 2013 to 2017. During this time, Mr. Wheeler also led model-based systems engineering initiatives for NASA.
Mr. Wheeler’s early career included roles such as senior systems engineer at Structured Software Systems Limited from 2007 to 2010 and senior systems analyst at Science Applications International Corporation between 2004 and 2007. He also held leadership positions that included chief executive officer and instructor at Rock Divers Inc., where he was notably recognized with Outstanding Service Awards by the National Association of Underwater Instructors in 2005 and 2006. Mr. Wheeler’s foundational experiences included serving as a senior systems engineer at COLSA Corporation from 1989 to 2004 and as a principal engineer at Applied Research Associates Inc. between 1986 and 1989. He initially worked for Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville as an engineer from 1980 to 1986.
Mr. Wheeler’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1982. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in engineering with coursework in materials science and engineering studies and systems engineering on campus. Mr. Wheeler’s certifications include model-based systems engineering architecture from the University of Alabama and project management planning from the George Washington University.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Wheeler has been actively involved in professional organizations, such as the Alabama-Tennessee Trail of Tears Corridor Association Inc., where he has held various leadership roles since 1994. He is also a charter member and past president of the Huntsville National Trail of Tears Association.
Throughout his career, Mr. Wheeler has attributed much of his success to the invaluable lessons imparted by his family and mentors. His early work experiences on his family’s farm provided him with practical insights that have shaped his understanding of the world. Inspired by his father’s involvement with NASA, Mr. Wheeler developed a strong aptitude for programming languages during high school, which laid a robust foundation for his career.
Mr. Wheeler envisions continuing his work at MITRE, where he is involved in groundbreaking projects incorporating artificial intelligence and advanced operations research. These innovations represent the rapid evolution of technology that excites him about the future potential within his field.
