Dyah Arin Hening, PhD, application engineer at Applied Materials, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in manufacturing.
Born in Indonesia, Dr. Hening moved to the United States early in her academic career and began working at Ohio University, where she was pursuing her master’s degree and, eventually, her PhD. Her first job came in 2008 as the president of Permias, the Athens, Ohio-based association for Indonesian students attending Ohio University. The next year, Dr. Hening took on the role of research assistant for international student and faculty services at the school. From 2011 to 2013, she contributed as a graduate assistant, and in 2014 she began offering lectures as well.
After completing her PhD, Dr. Hening was recruited by Pentara Corporation in 2016, beginning a tenure of more than five years as a research assistant and statistician. An established company in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields. Pentara assists clients with challenging research. Dr. Hening’s insights aided the company in statistical analysis, data management, consulting and more.
In 2022, Dr. Hening stepped into her current and most notable position yet: application engineer at Applied Materials. An essential part of the technology ecosystem of the United States for over 50 years, Applied Materials specializes in creating semiconductors, computer chips, and advanced display equipment. As an application engineer, Dr. Hening helps her team discover and manufacture breakthroughs in the performance and power of the organization’s products. She ensures the company’s success by analyzing the needs of clients and making sure that the company can deliver.
Dr. Hening is especially proud of having been hired by Applied Materials despite not having significant prior experience in the industry. She was able to quickly learn and adapt in the face of the complexities of entering this field. In her first full year working in software deployment with Applied Materials, Dr. Hening was able to achieve two successful deployments. These achievements came in spite of new difficulties faced in deploying to the North American region and despite her team being relatively new in coming together.
Before venturing onto her vocational path, Dr. Hening sought a strong education, beginning with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Indonesia in 2007. She then attended Ohio University, obtaining a Master of Science in 2013. Subsequently, Dr. Hening earned a PhD in mechanical and systems engineering from the same institution in 2016. Notably, she became a new mother while working on her PhD and successfully balanced the responsibilities of both of these massive challenges.
Already noted for her accomplishments, Dr. Hening credits her success to sticking to the core principle of industrial engineering: continuous improvement. She seeks to implement that principle in everyday life, always looking for ways in which she can improve and become a better version of herself. Dr. Hening emphasizes looking for opportunities to do better even in the midst of life changes that are out of one’s control. She is committed to growing every day, no matter how big or small each moment of growth.
Beyond her primary vocation, Dr. Hening is also a dedicated wife and a loving mother to two children. In her free time, she enjoys singing, dancing, hiking, and participating in outdoor sports activities. Dr. Hening also helps uplift her community as the president of Indo Idaho, a Boise-based nonprofit group supporting Indonesian immigrants and culture in Idaho.
As she moves into the future, Dr. Hening hopes to provide a strong example for her children in building a professional life and a family while honoring her Indonesian heritage. Furthermore, she looks forward to continuing to excel in her role at Applied Materials. While Dr. Hening does not intend to pursue an executive leadership position in the organization, she is eager to take on more responsibilities that can lead to her having an even more significant impact on the company’s success. She also plans to seek U.S. patents in the future.
