With over four decades of professional experience, he has made significant contributions to the industry, particularly during his tenure at Advanced Micro Devices, which spanned over 15 years. As a test engineering manager from 2006 to 2024 and as a senior manager for system and test validation engineering for the organization from 2017 to 2024, Mr. Carlson garnered extensive success and recognition for his expertise.
During his tenure at Advanced Micro Devices, Mr. Carlson played a pivotal role in developing processes for high-profile projects, such as the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. His work in establishing the validation enablement team also became widely recognized and adopted throughout the company. Moreover, Mr. Carlson was instrumental in managing global teams and implementing protocols such as PCIe, USB, graphics, HDMI and DisplayPort. He retired from the company in 2024.
Before joining Advanced Micro Devices, Mr. Carlson honed his skills at Dell Inc. as a test engineering manager from 2000 to 2005. His responsibilities included developing the product testing engineering group for the server division, overseeing testing processes and ensuring the performance of high-speed signals. When he joined Dell Inc., he had approximately five employees beneath him. By the time he left the organization, it had expanded to three teams, each comprising 15 members.
Between 1997 and 2000, Mr. Carlson held a similar position at Western Digital Corporation. Earlier, he worked as an electrical engineer and regression test lead at Seagate Technology from 1990 to 1997. Mr. Carlson began his tenure in the industry in 1983 as an electronic test technician at AT&T (now Lucent Technology), laying the foundation for his future success. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic, attributes that have contributed significantly to his achievements.
Mr. Carlson holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Central Oklahoma since 1986 and a second Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering with a computer option from the University of Oklahoma since 1990. Furthermore, he received a Master of Science in electrical engineering with a focus on control theory from Oklahoma State University in 1996.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Carlson is deeply committed to civic engagement and community service. He volunteers with Texans on Mission Disaster Relief and Galveston Street Ministries, where he contributes to breakfast services for those in need. As a member of Gideons International and the Texas Baptist Mission Relief Organization, he actively participates in initiatives that provide aid during natural disasters. Additionally, Mr. Carlson serves as the secretary of the deacon at First Baptist Church in Galveston.
Throughout his career and personal life, Mr. Carlson has remained steadfast in his commitment to integrity and leadership rooted in faith. His legacy is one of principled dedication to both professional excellence and community service, reflecting the values instilled by his parents and nurtured through his faith journey. In retirement, Mr. Carlson looks forward to continuing his volunteer work with Texas Baptist Relief. He also plans to travel more extensively, with Idaho being one of his anticipated destinations.
