Company: MedStar Harbor Hospital
Location: Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Brian K. Gray, director of clinical engineering and clinical support operations at MedStar Harbor Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical engineering and sustainability.
Though his career spans an impressive length of over 35 years, Mr. Gray has dedicated the vast majority of that time to a single location: MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore. His first professional experiences were gained as a quality assurance technician with Baxter Healthcare. He joined MedStar Harbor Hospital in 1991 as the director of clinical engineering and environment of care. After proving himself in that role for several years, Mr. Gray’s position was shifted to director of clinical engineering and clinical support operations. He has served in the latter role since 1995, totaling 30 years in one position.
Mr. Gray’s daily responsibilities include overseeing the hospital’s entire clinical engineering department. Though his title shifted, he still manages the environment of care safety program, as well as MedStar Harbor Hospital’s sustainability program. Designed entirely by Mr. Gray, the sustainability program was recognized by the organization’s president and vice president as a significant accomplishment that will likely remain his legacy for many years to come. Mr. Gray has also showcased his capability for budget planning. He regularly assists with applications for and the execution of grant programs.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Gray pursued foundational educational opportunities. He earned an associate degree in biomedical engineering in 1989. Committed to lifelong learning, Mr. Gray has continued to bolster his credentials through training. He was certified as a health care safety planner in 2002, in emergency management in 2003 and as a health care technology manager in 2024.
Mr. Gray has distinguished himself throughout the field in a number of capacities. He was named the MedStar Harbor Hospital Person of the Year by the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce in 2017. Mr. Gray maintains membership in the Baltimore Medical Engineers and Technicians Society and ECRI, formerly known as the Emergency Care Research Institute, an organization devoted to bringing together data from a wide range of experts to improve health care globally. His associations with these groups help him to stay updated on the latest developments in clinical engineering. Mr. Gray attributes his success to the mentorship provided by senior leaders at MedStar Harbor Hospital as well as the patience he has learned over the course of his professional life.
Beyond his career, Mr. Gray is also known as a volunteer within his local community. He has volunteered his time as a member of the community advisory board for Masonville Cove, an urban wildlife refuge located in Baltimore. This work reflects Mr. Gray’s respect for nature and the importance of providing safe, meaningful outdoor experiences for the people of his community.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Gray is a loving husband. Outside of work, he finds deep enjoyment in spending time on the beach and gardening. Looking to the future, Mr. Gray remains committed to his work at MedStar Harbor Hospital, especially the sustainability and wellness program, which he hopes to advance further. Though he is not yet winding down his career, he also intends to do more succession planning as he gets closer to retirement age.
