Rupin Chothani, project manager at Technip Energies N.V., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering and project management.
Born in Mumbai, India, Mr. Chothani approached engineering as something of a family inheritance: His father, brother-in-law and multiple aunts and uncles had made their living in the field. He initially considered breaking with tradition and pursuing a career as a doctor. However, at just 14 years old, Mr. Chothani completed several aptitude evaluations that revealed his strong potential in mechanical engineering and architecture. Encouraged to go down this path, he became a junior manufacturing engineer at Artech Cooling Tower Pvt. Ltd. in 2003, building his experience working on a production assembly line and shop floor while performing mechanical maintenance.
Mr. Chothani’s first role in the United States was as a thermal engineer at ABB Lummus Technologies in 2006. He was responsible for heat transfer and combustion calculations and also worked on a case study investigating potential changes to fired heaters. Mr. Chothani returned to India for one year as a consulting product support engineer for Utility Power Test, followed by joining Environ Energy Systems LLC as a mechanical and thermal engineer in 2011. In that latter position, he managed all heater engineering for the company, including crude heaters, hot oil heaters and steam superheaters.
Culminating his professional journey so far, Mr. Chothani has served as a furnace mechanical engineer at Technip Energies N.V. since 2013. He accepted additional duties as a project manager, project engineer and proposal manager in 2023, demonstrating his growing importance to the company. Mr. Chothani’s responsibilities include overseeing the production of ethylene cracking furnaces, fire heaters and proprietary technology for the Federal Communications Commission. Based in France, Technip Energies employs more than 17,000 people across 34 countries with a focus on engineering technology to improve energy and sustainability around the world.
Though his career has been filled with many memorable moments, Mr. Chothani is most proud of his work within the fire data industry. In particular, he has played a key part in the development of advancements in ethylene cracking furnaces. Mr. Chothani has helped create innovations that have led to these furnaces being able to operate for up to 60 days without interruptions, reducing downtime and improving efficiency and profitability. He has collaborated with such major clients as BP, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and Exxon Mobil Corporation.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Chothani set himself up for future success through his education. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Mumbai in 2003. Subsequently, Mr. Chothani earned a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Bridgeport in 2006. He has been certified in the use of AutoCAD, design software utilized by engineers and project managers.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Chothani is a dedicated husband to his wife, Cathy, and a loving father to his 12-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter. Now passing that family tradition onto the next generation, he regularly volunteers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) events at his children’s schools. Mr. Chothani happily reports that both of his kids are now aspiring engineers themselves. Additionally, he enjoys bowling and traveling. He has visited 45 states in the United States and hopes to travel to the rest in the future.
