Viorel-Ioan Arimescu, PhD, owner of Nufology Plus LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in civil engineering and nuclear fuel performance.
Across the last 45 years, Dr. Arimescu has established himself as a thought leader in the field of nuclear energy with a particular focus on extending the operational duration of nuclear fuel. He demonstrated a strong interest in science from a young age and was encouraged by both his parents and teachers to cultivate this passion.
Guided and supported by many figures, Dr. Arimescu began his professional life in 1980 as a researcher at the Institute for Nuclear Research (aka Institutul de Cercetări Nucleare or ICN Pitesti) in his home country of Romania. After nearly 10 years there, he moved to North America to become a senior researcher at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, the largest nuclear science laboratory in Canada. In 1999, Dr. Arimescu took on dual roles as a senior expert and advisory engineer at Areva Inc., now Framatome. He filled those positions for over 20 years before semi-retiring in 2022.
Still committed to his career, Dr. Arimescu started his own company, Nufology Plus LLC, that same year. Through this organization, he is able to provide technical consulting services in engineering and nuclear science to a range of clients in the civil engineering industry. Despite being over 70 years old, Dr. Arimescu continues to lead research and design teams while contributing to multidisciplinary investigations. He specializes in ensuring safe, effective and economical use of nuclear fuel in power plants.
Dr. Arimescu’s performance in the field was born of his academic journey. He obtained a Master of Science in engineering physics from the University of Bucharest in 1979. Dr. Arimescu stayed at that institution to earn a PhD in 1987. He maintains affiliation with the American Nuclear Society, a professional organization that connects scientists, engineers and other professionals in the nuclear space.
Among his career accomplishments, Dr. Arimescu’s most noteworthy is assisting in the development of the first-ever statistically based methodology for analyzing the performance of nuclear fuel. Known as RODEX4, this software has become a respected framework for nuclear energy analysis in the field. Notably, Dr. Arimescu and his company made the deliberate choice not to pursue patents for much of this work, preferring instead to implement internal safeguards. He also took part in two major international research programs, helping to combine knowledge from around the world to make nuclear energy safer for everyone.
Further demonstrating his dedication to scientific progress, Dr. Arimescu has contributed to numerous articles in professional journals. His work has been published in the Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology and presented at the American Nuclear Society and the TopFuel: Nuclear Reactor Fuel Performance Conference.
In addition to his achievements in his primary vocation, Dr. Arimescu is a devoted husband and a loving father to one child. His favorite pastime is playing tennis. In the years ahead, Dr. Arimescu plans to continue expanding his work with Nufology Plus LLC with hopes of further extending the duration of fuel use in nuclear power plants. He also plans to explore other areas, especially artificial intelligence, which he believes could have a major effect on not just nuclear but all fields of science in the future.
