Brian D. Babcock, president at PCCT LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Consulting, Materials and Intellectual Property and Technology Development for Commercialization.

Mr. Babcock is an expert in his field, best known for his work in materials and intellectual property, and technology development for commercialization. Since 2020, he has served as the president and founder of Polymer Chemistry & Coating Technologies Consulting (PCCT LLC), where he provides fractional intellectual property management consulting to numerous startups. In this capacity, Mr. Babcock advises clients on managing their technology portfolios, assists with initial patent filings and develops comprehensive intellectual property strategies as companies bring products to market. He also supports the technical aspects of innovation plans, engages in expert witness litigation consulting by reviewing cases provided by the attorney general and preparing detailed reports, and occasionally conducts independent testing or document analysis. By maintaining regular communication with clients and colleagues, Mr. Babcock ensures that strategic plans are aligned with organizational goals each month and quarter.

Before founding PCCT LLC, Mr. Babcock was an intellectual property manager at SunEdison/GCL Solar Materials from 2015 to 2018. There, he oversaw the protection and management of intellectual property assets within the solar materials sector, contributing to the company’s competitive positioning in a rapidly evolving industry.

From 2022 to 2023, Mr. Babcock also held the position of intellectual property manager at Johnson & Johnson in a contract role for a new cross-sector initiative within the organization. Earlier, he held dual roles as a principal scientist and intellectual property director at Surnetics from 2013 to 2015. His time at Surnetics stands out as a period of significant achievement. He developed innovative technology for coding diagnostics and managing liquid control in diagnostics. Building a comprehensive portfolio around this work, Mr. Babcock’s efforts opened new professional opportunities and laid the foundation for his subsequent transition into independent consulting.

Notably, Mr. Babcock’s decision to pivot into entrepreneurship was driven by years of corporate experience, followed by the founding of Surnetics to focus on the technology he had developed. As demand for his consulting services grew, he established PCCT Consulting to expand his reach in consulting and intellectual property management.

Between 2013 and 2015, Mr. Babcock served as a patent agent at Pauly, DeVries Smith & Deffner, LLC. In this role, he provided legal and technical expertise in patent prosecution and intellectual property strategy for a diverse client base. From 2008 to 2013, Mr. Babcock excelled as an intellectual property manager at Donaldson, a global leader in the filtration industry. In this brand-new role, he took over the company’s comprehensive internal management of its IP for the first time, overseeing over 2,500 patent portfolios. This position followed his initial tenure from 2004 to 2008 as a senior chemical engineer at the company, during which he led research initiatives and developed advanced filtration solutions. Mr. Babcock began his professional journey as a chemical engineer at Kimberly-Clark in 2001, where he contributed to product development projects in the consumer goods sector.

Mr. Babcock graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in chemical engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He holds several professional credentials that have enhanced his ability to serve clients effectively, including a certified licensing professional certification from Certified Licensing Professional, Inc., and a U.S. Patent Agent certification from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Babcock is civically engaged as a volunteer adult leader with Scouting America. He derives great satisfaction from mentoring youth through scouting activities and teaching life skills that extend beyond technical knowledge.

Throughout his career, Mr. Babcock has demonstrated exceptional expertise in consulting, materials science and intellectual property management, an achievement that reflects both his technical acumen and strategic vision. Several factors have contributed to this success, including an openness to learning new skills, a willingness to embrace different roles across industries and adaptability when moving from corporate positions to entrepreneurship.

Although Mr. Babcock did not have traditional mentors during the past two decades, especially as he transitioned into newer companies, he recognized the importance of mentorship through his early career experience. This realization inspired him to become an advocate for mentoring novice engineers and scientists in technology and intellectual property fields. Today, Mr. Babcock remains committed to providing meaningful guidance to emerging professionals despite the challenges posed by remote work environments.
